"FREE BEFORE I DIE..."

they say that songwriting can be a catharsis.   a release... i'm not sure that i've ever felt that so much in my entire time recording and writing until now.   i've for sure had moments of it but sonically and lyrically i just felt it so much with this album.   as a whole, i'm so proud of it.    i think it covers all areas of my life.   i think it's honest and inspired.  i think it's written for me, by me.... it is the story of where i am and who i am now and how i got here and where i want to be.   a decision to be free from where i've been.  to be myself and write and sing and record what I FEEL and not what others want to hear...   unless they're with me.   unless they can feel it too, then i'm glad to be singing along....

"SAY WHATEVER"
- this song came late in the process of making this record.   i was making a list of very simple things that i enjoy which essentially make me me.   reasons why i wanted to free.   it ended up a bit defiant.  a bit of an anthem for this record which is why it starts the record off.   an ode to me, and those of us who often have to fight for our place on this earth.   musically, the song has been through a lot of changes.   a song written as a dance tune that really just wanted to be played at a piano bar late in the night when drinks are flowing and bodys are swaying back and forth singing along.    and no truer words have completed one of my songs than 'i will always love new york.'

"I FELL IN LOVE (NEW YORK)"
- continuing my attraction to new york and piano players, this song is just fun.   i think it's a bit sexy which is something along with so many other things in my life i am embracing and allowing.   a very new sound for me, as easy going as it all sounds.   it was a little frightening to record.    the song, once again has changed very much from it's earlier versions...   things become what they were born to be, for sure.

"TWO BLACK RINGS"
- this one is about my failed engagement.   it was all so big and amazing when it happened and so confusing and sad how quickly everything changed.   the song is about learning how to ask for help and take the time you need to heal.   the record was going to be originally called 'broken down things.'

"BETTER DREAMS"
- another song which came late in the process of creating this record, 'better dreams' is built on the chorus of an old song i'd written but never recorded.   it's about changing perspective.   being ok because you believe you're ok.   this one picks up the pace and comforts the other pieces of me on the record that need a ring leader.

"RESCUE BOATS"
- this one is about believing in the light at the end of the tunnel.  finding strength in the greater picture rather than being lost and hysterical in a moment.   help is on the way.   i love this song.

"FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE"
- the last song written for this record.   a couple too many vodka drinks and whoops - out pops this ditty which was a bit more angry when i wrote it then how it turns out here.   it's about that unfortunate truth that shit happens...   we can dance and sing about it though.   so, that's whats up.

"FREE BEFORE I DIE"
- somewhere i will always be in a piano bar in new york city with frost on the window and cigarettes burning in an ashtray singing this song... on the most beautiful night on this most beautiful planet.   this is my song.   maybe my favorite of any song i've ever written and recorded.   if i have a funeral, perhaps this song should be playing.

"BEING WRONG"
- recorded in one take and almost discarded because it was so real to me.   something beautiful about how scary this song is.   raw, pleading and deep breaths.   the ultimate in heartache is removing yourself.  we do what we have to do.

"I CALL YOUR NAME"
- wrote this for my mother.   one of the first songs written for the record.   it's honest and i kept the production very minimal.   it has what feels like religious undertones to it.   it's an important song in my catalog and i love it.  has some for real dark thought processing weaved through it and it is looking for and finding hope.

"FLORIDA"
- a free flowing melody and songwriting that came from incense and pen and paper in my bedroom late at night in a safe place thinking about a place that didn't feel safe at all.   feels like looking back and overcoming.

"ON AND ON"
- in the same way that "Say Whatever" was written as a dance song, so was this song.   Infact it was even recorded that way and the vocal and effects are kept from the original version.   i think it adds a very haunting effect to this piano ballad that adds to the unique and cool sound of it.   it sounds like being left in a dark room alone still in love with someone who is not still in love with you, who is infact not even there anymore.  you are alone.  must. find. door.  it is time to move on.

"A HEART LETTING GO"
- so, the last record had just been released and i wasn't really relating to it.   it was fun for sure but it didn't feel like me saying what i wanted to say.   it's cool to have a good time and all, but i was in a different space in my head.    this song is the first song i recorded for this record and is exactly how i felt when i was listening to "electricalifornia" after it's release.   i felt alone and strong.   i felt like beginning.  like a baby.  not accomplished like 'electricalifornia' was saying.

"WHY WAIT FOR A PIRATE"
- wrote this during the pen and paper sessions...  candles and incense and i was thinking about the widow's watches on top of the houses back in portland, maine.   i let my mind run and wrote a story about one of those women up there and were they always sad if the man did NOT come home.    or were they relieved?  the vocal is the first take with no effects on it.   a raw and dark song about what we sometimes do to ourselves.

"FREE FALLING"
- as i was recording this record, i recorded this tom petty cover which seemed to resonate with me as i was allowing myself to feel and write exactly how i felt.    to sing how i felt like singing.   to not care if i failed... to just do what i felt i had to do...   to just be myself.     no pleasing...  just falling free...   and it feels SO damn good.

Studio Diary #4.

Some albums, you want to make.   You have a concept and an idea and you really try to make that into a reality.   And then there are some records that NEED to be made.   Songs that demand to exist and use the songwriter only as a tool through which to be born....

This new record  is the kind of record that NEEDED to be made!    I was exhausted after the release of "Electricalifornia."   It took me almost 6 months to come up with 11 songs for that record (12 if we include the bonus track #funnite).   In that time period, I wrote only a total of 15 songs.   I was writing songs to be consumed.   It had nothing to do with me.   But the sound, and feel and concept.   It was challenging and I do not regret doing it, but the process, like i said, left me exhausted and I was pretty convinced I needed a long long break from music.

But then, only 2 months after the release of "Electricalifornia" in early September, without warning I wrote and recorded with my phone the very beginnings of one of these songs and I was re-ignited!    The passion was back.   I lit candles and incense and wrote pen & paper style and within a month and a half I've written close to 30 songs for this record.   14 of those songs made the final cut.   One of them being the tom petty cover currently promo single,  "Free Falling."

It was obvious what I was writing about for this record from the beginning.   Songs about release.   About finding freedom, and being free.   Feeling better.   No direct theme but a for real desire to exercise some demons and clean out some closets...

The sound stretches from soft rock to blues to piano bar tunes.

I have a bit of last minute touches and of course the album art work and liners and the release date is scheduled for this coming Saturday November 9, 2013.

I am sure I've much more to say about the record and I'm sure I will in time.  I feel it's a very personal and very current snapshot of my life.   I'm more than excited to firstly say this product is mine and secondly to share it.

For now enjoy "Free Falling."  There is more to come.    A remix of it is in the soundcloud widget to the right ------------------------->

Studio Diary #3

haven't blogged a lot throughout the process of recording this record.   i guess maybe i thought it was too personal or maybe it was going to be a 'lesser' project...   one of the reasons i enjoy doing this is because of the unexpected changes each song and project process goes through.   i have 11 songs ready for the record at this point and i'm working on 2 more before completion... and even at this point, things are still changing and evolving.    i don't really no how to compare this project to any others.   it's a far more 'honest' work than 'electricalifornia.'   and it may be a more cohesive project then 'bad day.'   perhaps, it's just it's own thing...  a bit of blues, a lot of ballads....   i dunno...     anyway it's back to the studio this weekend to see what happens...

'no ship is unsinkable.'

PEN/PAPER SESSIONS: STUDIO DIARY #2.

haven't really been online a whole lot with this new recording session.  it's very low-fi and folky.   i think what i'm recording is good for me but i honestly don't know how the rest of the world would handle it.    with 'electricalifornia' i was really trying to put myself out there and make music anyone could dig...   this new record is way more for me.

that being said... got 11 songs so far.   2 covers.

PEN/PAPER SESSIONS STUDIO DIARY #1

have started writing again, and recording.   going for something like a rock/folk vibe i think?   songs that i write by candle light and incense burning at night in my bedroom... just me and my dog.    the songs are coming easily and i don't really want to spend an amazing amount of time on the production as i did on the last record.   perhaps just let the music/lyrics talk.   this is all far more about the lyrics for me..     i have 6 songs recorded so far... demos (i think?)    perhaps a late october/november release?     oh, and i need to put out one more song from the 'electricalifornia' record next week but i've no idea what......   haha

"BEAUTIFUL 2NITE" SINGLE RELEASED!!!!!!!

One of the very first ideas i had for the "electricalifornia" record, this song is a dance/ballad about loving yourself and celebrating your life instead of knowing your differences and hardships and hiding.   The power and safety and freedom that is found on the dance floor.    Enjoy!

"THE COOL KIDS" PROMO IS THE LATEST RELEASE FROM 'ELECTRICALIFORNIA'!!!!

Written as a super sarcastic folk tune on guitar, this one got a helluva makeover for the "electricalifornia" record and almost didn't make the final cut.    i just really think it's fun and like the line about sneakers....  i get a bit serious sometimes in my songwriting so i thought i would put this one out there, just for fun.

i never been that cool, kid =)

Hey, guess what???   The album art and everything is complete and it all looks super freakin cool!    it's soo 80's/90's rave that it makes me so happy!!!      i guess everything is complete and ready to go for midnight on August 1.    Working on the "Radio Radio" artwork and release stuff.     I look back on this journey and this record and i'll admit it was challenging, but really really super fun.  i think it does a great job of showing a lot of different sides of me and i'm proud of this project.    can't wait for release!!!!!!

all that's left is editing and choosing the artwork and completing the liner notes.    a physical release will come later but the record will be released on august 1, as planned.   a long road on the way to 'electricalifornia' but i'm so glad and proud that we are here.    the final tracklisting for the record is as follows...

1) Closer
2) Beautiful 2nite
3) Forgive U, Forget U
4) Electricalifornia
5) The Cool Kids
6) Trust
7) Run Away
8) Radio Radio (Feat Allison Grey)

Studio Diary #13: Electricalifornia

7 songs recorded so far for the record.   there will be a total of 10, although there's another one that's trying to push it's way onto the record, so we'll see.   i could keep on going tonight but it's hella late so the next song is gonna have to wait for tomorrow....    pushing hard for an august 1 release as i'm watching myself slip slowly past the original release date of this week...     no worries, i never been a cool kid, baby =)

Studio Diary #10: Electricalifornia

I have i believe 2 complete tracks for the record.   Working on the music and melodies for the other songs.   2 of them are head 2 head if they're making the record or not, and as is tradition when i'm recording, a new song has come out which i believe is going to be the final track on the record.    i know it is taking me a long time but i'm pretty serious about this bunch of tunes.    meanwhile, 'closer' has been burning up soundlick and i'm proud to have it out there.....   i gotta go, i'm busy in the studio haha!

"NO ONE IS LISTENING" from "BAD DAY" is released!

Originally wrote and recorded as a hard rocking very angry song, this one has turned into a ballad about addiction with a very intense feel.    I think it reflects a lot of where the record as a whole is coming from.   The simple piano cords pan from one ear to the other to contrast the deep and yearning vocal.

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Studio Diary #3: vault

i have 3 more tests for school and then vacation and i will return to finish and release this project at that time. should be mid to late this month.   in the meantime the latest and final single from 'bad day' which will be 'no one is listening' will drop later this week.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Studio Diary #2: Vault

all songs are ready except for one "bx2" that i'm reworking for a release.   artwork is in the process of being complete.   and the record should see a mid may release if not earlier.    need to decide if 'bad day' is going to get another single or not.

Studio Diary #1: Vault

Cleaning out the old stuff so i can start fresh when i begin recording again.   Over the last couple of years there's been quite the pile of 'scraps' created.   been working on that tonight...   there's one that i might even post.

"SCARS" single released.

The latest release from "Bad Day" is the song, "Scars."   It's probablyyyyyyyyyy my favorite song off of the record.   My roommate was talking to me about her history of self injury and it really made me think.   I'm glad to report that she's been lucky enough to have people who cared enough about her and that she cared enough about her self to seek the help she needed.     All of that pain for her has been channeled into her being a first year MSW (Social Work) at Sac State College.    I'm proud to release this song here, and on youtube, and on my soundclick.

"DECENT HUMAN BEING (Inspired Theme From Oz The Great And Powerful)" Single Released!

The third single from the "Bad Day" record is "Decent Human Being"  and it's inspired by the film "Oz The Great And Powerful."   The song speaks for itself and what is heard here is a remix of a far more sparse track from the record.   Enjoy.

Studio Diary #15: COMPLETE!

second cover shoot tonight.   i got exactly what i wanted and all that is left to do with the record is the liner notes.   i think this record is really something special.   i put a lot of my heart and soul into it like i never have before.   there are some fun light moments and then some more introspective perhaps darker moments.   there are a few angry moments and a few fed up moments.   not every story in this book has a happy ending but at least they are real.

i was waiting to make sure but i am ready to announce the second single from the record after 'sidewalks' will be "a bad day."   i worked a lot with the music and the lyrics to this one are pretty fun.    after i finish the liner notes for the record i will be shooting a video for the single and it also should be ready and released on friday.

this will be the last studio diary for this record.   there were moments when i wasn't sure this album would even get to be released.   so many set-backs and studio problems.   even song writing was scaring me for a while.   i didn't have any idea what to write until i just tried to get really real.   both in my humor and the more serious moments i had.

the record covers a lot of ground from homelessness in 'sidewalks' to self injury.  political rants and anger.   love songs and hate songs.   songs about future desires and frustrations with living and effort.   homage to those lost and gratitude to those who walk with us.

my friend allison grey shows up on two of the tracks.   the first single 'sidewalks' of course, and secondly on a cover of coldplay's 'every teardrop is a waterfall' which is one of my favorite songs, ever.   it was an amazing experience to actually work with someone else making music and memories.   i look forward to doing it more in the future.

aside from 'sidewalks' there is no percussion on this record.  lots of piano and guitars and other sounds.   i wanted this to be a record that i could play acoustically.  to perform simple and without any trappings.  in that sense the record is raw.   i think that there are sure moments of raw music meeting raw lyrics.    i held nothing back with this record and did not try to be nice to anyone.  including myself... choosing instead for realness.   in that sense, this record has been a journey indeed.

i did not borrow from my back log.   all of the songs have been written between november 2012 and january 2013.   three of the songs i had bits and pieces of ideas for 'sidewalks' included in that list for a few months before then but the songs were written in full within the timeframe i stated.

i initially did not want to include a cover song on this record but 'ever tear' was just too hard to give up and i think it adds to this record as a part of.

i don't know what else to say right now, i can't believe it's completed.   i can't believe that it's over. and in fact, just beginning.
                                                                                      - jay brymer    midtown sacramento, california.

Studio Diary #14

The album is finished finally!!!!!!!!     Almost 4 months after i began working on this record it has been a serious journey.   it's pushed me and pissed me off.   I think it's pretty real and raw in a way i've not really allowed myself to be.    The release date is Feb 1, 2013, this coming friday.  5 days from now!    The second single from the record will be announced this week.  I'm pretty sure I know what it's going to be but i just need to make sure.   The artwork needs to be completed and the liner notes finished.    The countdown is on...

Studio Diary #13

back in the studio tonight with alli.   doing a cover song of a super cool song.   album release date is in a few days and also i want to re-do the cover art.   this record's release date is friday,. feb 1.   i hope i make it.   besides redoing the versses on one of the songs and the chorus on another and singing my part to the duet i did with ms. grey tonight, it's pretty much done.   there is one other song that i'd like to add to the record so i don't know..... still very up in the air on this one.   i will pull it all together in the next week.

Studio Diary #12

had the album photo shoot today and spent a lot of time in the studio.   the record is nearly done.   3 songs left.   i've spent far more time on this record then i ever have.   i'm proud of what i've created and i've found out i still have a lot to sing and write about.   a lot of this record has been collaborative with allison grey and it feels good not to do it alone.   she is featuring on two tracks on this record but has gave a great amount of input and inspiration and even helped me with the cover shoot.   it's been a long day of recording and photo taking and there was even a bit of a fire with all of the candles....   the record should be released next week.

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Studio Diary #11

back in the studio tonight.   7 tracks completed for the record.   the song i believe will be the second single among them.   i'm pretty sure this record will be finished in the next few days.      .....i think?

Studio Diary #10: NEW RECORD WILL BE CALLED "BAD DAY"

THE RECORD WILL BE CALLED "BAD DAY" AND IS SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE EARLY FEBRUARY!!!!!!

hopefully the studio will be up and running in a few days and i will be able to complete this record.   the release date depends on the computer equipment.

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Studio Diary #9

perhaps a disaster?   the cord to the laptop i was using for the studio burst into flames.   does that mean the february 3 release date i was shooting for wasn't what i was supposed to be doing?   holding off on any further recording but i am working on some new songs and a song i think i really need to cover... i have to think about it though....  so for now, it's a break.   respite, indeed.

Studio Diary #7

Returned from holiday break this morning to lay down some musical tracks in the studio for the record.   did some vocals too.     not sure if these are final tracks or just ideas forming.   i have almost 20 demos to pick from for this record and the songs seem to keep coming.  i guess that's what happens when you take time off.

torn between a computer game sound and a bare bones feel for this record... it really does seem like a far more raw version of 'BOG.'   like, 'BOG' meets silence maybe?   i dunno too early in the soundscape to tell...   it's my dogs birthday today so i'm off to the park.   happy new year =)
